Calixto Bieito's production, created in partnership with Den Norske Opera and Ballet, delves into the complexities of gender interactions in the 1970s, near the end of Francisco Franco's dictatorship. It is about a woman who desires love but ends up creating bitterness and fixation instead. She creates untold passion in men, but she risks being engulfed by it herself. Carmen opera was originally written in the opéra comique style, with musical parts interspersed with dialogue. The opera is set in southern Spain and recounts the narrative of Don José, a naive soldier who is seduced by the fiery gypsy Carmen's wiles.
