The opera takes you back to England around the 1600s, it depicts in detail the tortuous relationship between Queen Elizabeth I and the Earl of Essex. How they started their relationship as friends, then confidantes, and because of the evil plans of the Earl and his scheme of replacing the Queen, she goes on to sign the death warrant of the Earl.
