Winner of the 2020 National Book Critics Circle Award, it was also the Waterstones Book of the Year, and Maggie O'Farrell's book also took home the Women's Prize for Fiction. Erica Whyman, the Royal Shakespeare Company's acting artistic director, is directing Hamnet. Award-winning playwright Lolita Chakrabarti, whose works include Red Velvet, Invisible Cities, Hymn, The Goddess, and the critically acclaimed stage adaptation of Yann Martel's Life of Pi, which won five Olivier Awards, including Best New Play in 2022, is responsible for adapting the play for the stage. Madeleine Mantock (Blithe Spirit – West End) reprises her role as Agnes Hathaway. Tom Piper did the set design for Hamnet, Prema Mehta did the lighting, and Ouz Kaplangi did the music.
Agnes Hathaway, a natural healer, meets William Shakespeare, a Latin tutor, in Warwickshire around 1582. They get together to form a family and a life together after being drawn together by strong yet unknown instincts. Agnes remains at home to care for their three children while William travels to London to find his place in the theatre world; yet, she is his continuous companion and the driving force behind his existence. Hamnet, 11, is taken from his beloved parents by the plague, and each of them must deal with their grief on their own. Yet this greatest anguish gives birth to something truly amazing.
