This much-praised monodrama was written by award-winning Welsh dramatist Gary Owen and was inspired by a Greek story. Sophie Melville, who has taken on the role of "Effie" again after winning The Stage Award for Acting Excellence and being nominated for the Evening Standard Award for Best Actress, is directed by Lyric Hammersmith's artistic director Rachel O'Riordan. The show's lighting design is by Rachel Mortimer, with show design by Hayley Grindle. Sam Jones handles the sound design, and Toots Butcher is the associate designer.
Storyline
Effie is not the kind of person you would intentionally smile at while walking down the street. If you spotted her prowling the street before midday, drunk, you would probably be more likely to cross the street rather than make eye contact. Even though you believe you know her, you may just be privy to only a part of her story. Her life is a complete disaster. Every night she indulges in alcohol, drugs, and drama, although every morning her hangover is so much worse than the one before, which was unquestionably the worst hangover ever. The cycle seems to go on forever when she finally gets the chance to be something greater one evening. What happens next? Where does destiny take her?
