The story took a year to write, according to Stoppard, but the conception of the idea dates back to a lot earlier. It is inspired by Stoppard’s own experience of his grandparent’s death in Nazi concentration camps.
The play is directed by the acclaimed Patrick Marber who brings to life the ideas and writing of Stoppard. It is an intimate drama that follows the themes of endurance, family, and acceptance. The original music by Adam Cork adds another layer of emotion to the story, transcending the play into realms of poignant impact. This story will steal your heart on sob, sniffle, and smile at a time
The story follows a Viennese family living in the golden age of history where art and intellect flourished in Vienna. The play’s name comes from a district in Vienna, Leopoldstadt, in which Jewish tenets crammed up after being granted full civil rights at the beginning of the 18th century. The life of this family, among many other Jewish ones, comes to a stark halt in the wake of the Halaucast. As panic ensued to outrun the Nazi generals chasing them like they were pests, the themes of endurance, grit, and family are explored. The play sheds light on what it meant to be a Jew during Hitler’s regime, making for a spine-chilling experience.
