Relive the thrill of time travel with Back to the Future the Musical on Broadway. This electrifying adventure transports you back to decades past, where Marty McFly and Doc Brown defy the laws of physics and embark on a hilarious and heartwarming journey through time.
Based on the iconic movie of the same name, the musical follows Marty McFly, a high school student in the 1980s who accidentally travels back to 1955 in a time machine built by the eccentric scientist, Doc Brown. As any sci-fi fan well versed in the laws of time travel knows, it's tricky breaking the time-space continuum without endangering your own existence. After accidentally meddling in his parents' meet-cute, Marty must fix the present and navigate the challenges of the past while racing against time to return to the future.
A quintessential sci-fi classic, the film introduced a new generation of young fans to the genre and launched Michael J. Fox, who originated Marty, to global fame. Beyond the obvious, however, was the brilliant way this tale blended sci-fi with other genres like romance, adventure, and comedy while telling a surprisingly nuanced tale of taking the bull of time by the horns and changing one's destiny. The stage show does a stellar job of adapting what made the film so beloved into a musical that adds dramatic flair and pizazz to an already fun ride.
The musical premiered at England's Manchester Opera House in 2020 before transferring to West End the following year. It opened on Broadway in 2023 at the Winter Garden Theatre, where it has played since.
The current cast includes Roger Bart as Doc Brown and Casey Likes as Marty McFly. Evan Alexander Smith and Liana Hunt play Marty's parents George and Lorraine, while the rest of the cast includes a brilliantly talented ensemble of performers who light up the stage.
The show runs for an impressive 2 hours and 35 minutes, including one 20-minute interval. Despite the run-time, though, this show stays engaging throughout and is worth seeing as much for the nostalgia it inspires as for the amazing performances it delivers.
Broadway theaters don't impose a strict dress code other than an expectation that patrons dress appropriately for the occasion. When in doubt, smart casuals are the best way to go. If you're feeling a little fancy, however, feel free to dress in Back to the Future-themed outfits and let your inner child be a part of the magic as it unfolds.
The show has announced January 5, 2025, as the final date for its current run at the Winter Garden Theatre. Don't miss out on the chance to experience this brilliant production of Back to the Future the Musical live!
