SIX lovers, it's time to lose your heads since your favorite terrible Tudor gang is heading for the silver screen! The chart-topping musical SIX has made a royal decree: they're making their cinematic debut this April and it'll have the original queens straight off West End.
SIX is West End and Broadway royalty, winning more than 23 awards, including the 2022 Tony Award for Best Original Score and an Olivier award. Additionally, the musical received eight Tony Award nominations in 2022, including Best New Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Direction of a Musical.
SIX whips out the historical tea about the lives of Henry VIII's six wives, but with a twist. The show is reimagined as a glitter-tastic pop concert where each queen gets a chance to compete for the ultimate crown—who was worst-treated by the king. It's a history lesson that rivals Hamilton, with the girl power of the Spice Girls.
Written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, the musical casts Henry VIII’s wives as contemporary figures reclaiming their narratives, presenting their stories with a healthy dose of sass. Ever since its debut at the Edinburgh Fringe Film Festival in 2017, this show has garnered over 3.2 million viewers globally.
The filmed performance will be screened on 6 April 2025 in UK cinemas, featuring the original West End cast. If you were team Catherine, Catherine or even Katherine (most of us are already Team Anne), then you're going to love watching these queens as they step right off the stage. With performances from Jarnéia Richard-Noel as Catherine of Aragon, Millie O’Connell as Anne Boleyn, Natalie Paris as Jane Seymour, Alexia McIntosh as Anna of Cleves, Aimie Atkinson as Katherine Howard, and Maiya Quansah-Breed as Catherine Parr, the show promises all its glittery, campy glory.
Original showrunners Marlow and Moss say “We had SO much fun making this film with the most incredible team of filmmakers and creatives, and it was so special to be reunited with the exceptionally talented and ICONIC original West End queens. We’re so grateful that we had the opportunity to film the show, and that we get to share Six with a wider audience in this new and exciting way. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it!!!”
The film version is directed by Liz Clare, and accompanied by an onstage band known as the Ladies in Waiting. Fun fact, the original cast of SIX teamed up with their cast understudy to form the band SVN!
The show isn't just limited to the screen, though. Cinemas across the nation are planning themed events for the release. Expect costume contests, karaoke nights, and maybe even a chance to show off your Anne Boleyn eyeliner skills (who needs the guillotine anymore?)
Gather your queens, dust off those ruffs and capes, and prepare to sing your heart out in the cinema. After all, wedding, beheading, and empire-shredding has never been this catchy.
Six the movie is set to premiere in theaters nationwide on April 5th. Tickets go on sale starting March 1st. Don’t lose your head—this is one event you don’t want to miss.
Catch SIX in cinemas this April, but don't miss the West End that started it all at the Vaudeville Theatre!
