Hackney Empire, situated on Mare Street in Hackney, is one of London’s oldest theatres, with an almost mind-boggling history. Designed by iconic theatre architect Frank Matcham as a music hall in 1901, the theatre is believed to be one of the most beautiful London performance spaces by critics. It has had a tumultuous past and was close to being demolished in the 1980s. But, Roland Muldoon’s campaign to acquire the freehold saved it and now it stands as one of London’s most architecturally rich and beloved theatres for all forms of performance art, from operas to dance to stand-up comedy acts.
