Before premiering in West End, the play performed on Broadway where it was an instant hit. Director Roy Marsden beautifully brings to stage the story of first love and second chances. The power of the story is in its simplicity, with minimal set design and a simple story. The play weaves the story of the lifetime of two friends solely through the letters they share with each other.
This tale of Andrew and Melissa starts with a thank you note Melissa exchanges with him at her birthday party. Thus romantic friendship ensues; a relationship between two confidants, which lasts for their lifetime. Their lives take completely opposite turns after their first meeting, but their letters continue, becoming their place of solace. They meet only twice but the impact they have on each other’s lives echoes the same solace. The letters are laced with candid communications, honest confessions, and fears, which become a cornerstone of a solid lifelong friendship. Only at the end of the play, we get to know how much of a difference the letters make in shaping their lives.
