Elizabeth Thompson, popularly known as Lady Butler, was a British painter. Her historical paintings, particularly those that featured military settings like The Roll Call, were her best-known pieces. She expertly captured the tension and spectacle of these events in her works, which frequently depicted soldiers engaged in combat. Thompson was the first woman to have ever received the title of 'Lady' from Queen Victoria for her achievements. During her lifetime, her paintings enjoyed tremendous popularity. The musical, Modest, was written by Ellen Brammar, and Rachel Barnes handled the composition and musical direction. Luke Skilbeck and Paul Smith are in the director's chair, which has set designs by Qianer Jin and lighting designs by Jessie Addinall as well as sound and musical compositions by Eliyana Evans. Terry Herfield handles the costume designs while Prime Isaac is the assistant director.

Storyline

It is 1874. Elizabeth Thompson is set to upend the foundations of the Royal Academy with her groundbreaking painting The Roll Call. She will, however, only have fleeting success because, five years later, she will fail to gain the two votes she needs to become the first woman to be elected to the Academy. Elizabeth battles for a seat at a table covered in top hats, ties, and mutton chop beards while bearing the desires and aspirations of women across the nation, including her suffragette sister.
