This production of Oedipus is a fresh take on the legendary Greek tragedy by Sophocles. Acclaimed director Robert Icke, known for his innovative adaptations, reimagines the story for a modern audience. The Guardian calls it "a startlingly contemporary and razor-sharp version" (Mark Fisher) that tackles issues relevant to our times. The play's sold-out runs at Edinburgh also included an impressive production design. Watch out for the sleek set gradually dismantling as the play progresses, mirroring the unraveling of Oedipus' life.
It's election night. The polls predict a landslide victory, and a sense of anticipation hangs thick in the air. But beneath the political drama lies a personal one. As the political landscape shifts around him, Oedipus delves into a dark secret from his past, one that threatens to shatter everything he holds dear. The lines between ambition, power, and family loyalty blur in this suspenseful adaptation. Will the truth he unearths destroy his world and those closest to him? The cast, designers, director, writer and everyone else involved. This was a beautiful production. Edge of my seat the entire time. I'm an old lady who's seen thousands of plays on and off Broadway and a few in London and this was the greatest evening at the theater ever. Yay to all the people who made it happen. I'm also an actor and I bow down to all the actors in this play. Holy moly, I'm still thinking about it.
Clever reinterpretation of a classic without giving away the punch line till the end. Also great acting and side plots distract one from what in the end should have been the obvious only conclusion.
Excellent seat - 3rd row. The performances were incredible!
