Based on the epic 1977 film by John Cassavetes, often considered to be the pioneer of American independent film, Opening Night revolves around a famous but extremely troubled actress who wants to make a comeback. The musical is the newest production of Rufus Wainwright, whose album 'Unfollow the Rules' has been nominated for the Grammy and Juno awards, and stars renowned actress Sheridan Smith in the leading role. Smith was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and her acting as Elle Woods in Legally Blonde made her win the Olivier and WhatsOnStage awards. Storyline

Adapted from John Cassavetes' 1977 film, Opening Night, the musical follows a popular but troubled actress, Myrtle Gordon who wants to make a comeback on stage through a touring production of 'The Second Woman'. However, Gordon soon encounters an obsessive fan, Nancy, and things take a turn for the worse. How does she deal with the incident? How is the touring troupe affected by Gordon's behaviour? This is a challenging play but well worth the effort and Sheridan Smith's performance is superb. I am really glad I went!
