Raymonda is Tamara Roja’s first attempt at choreographing and directing a show, although it’ll be hard to tell based on the finesse and precision on display. This rarely performed ballet has been transformed for modern audiences, creating a show that’s compelling on its own rights. This mesmerizing adaptation is headed to the London Coliseum for a limited run in the early 2023. Don’t miss your chance to catch this dramatic reworking of classic ballet.
The splendid and sensuous score by Alexander Glazunov and the classical choreography of ballet maestro Marius Petipa has been retained for this adaptation. What has changed is the story which now features a heroine in charge of her own destiny. Building on Roja’s illustrious career as a dancer and artistic director, Raymonda is another feather on her already heavy hat!
The show opens in 1853 in England as Raymonda runs away from everything she’s ever known to become a nurse in the Crimean War. During the war, she becomes engaged to a soldier, John. Soon after, she begins to develop feelings for his friend Abdur, a leader of the Ottoman army. As the conflict grows deeper, who Raymonda eventually gives her heart to forms the rest of the story. While fictional, the plot of Raymonda takes considerable inspiration from the unshakable spirit of Florence Nightingale and the many brilliant women who supported the war effort in Crimea.
