The Throne takes place in 2002 with the festivities for the Golden Jubilee of the Queen’s ascension to the throne well underway. Her Majesty the Queen will open the new Science block at Dudley Goring Comprehensive School as part of the celebrations. Almost everyone is looking forward to the arrival of their distinguished visitor.
Derek Jones is the school's Head of Science and an unapologetic socialist and diehard republican. Derek decides to usurp the Queen's throne in a fit of lunacy. Or rather, make use of the special 'facilities' that have been set up for the Queen's exclusive use. However, the Queen Herself catches him in the process. When the two realize they've been stuck in the Portaloo, their embarrassment is swiftly replaced by confusion and dread.
