This drama, also adapted as a film, received critic praises for how well it skates over social issues but is also humour-filled. As a Pope and a Cardinal take part in a conversation, it becomes they talk about regrets of the past and how those actions affected them and others on the way. Pope Benedict’s decision to resign comes as a shock. Thereafter Pope Francis takes the throne as his successor, and becomes the first non European Pope since the 8th century, a man with a common touch.
A tale of recounting past mistakes and creating a better future. In this dramatic rendition of Anthony McCarten's The Two Popes we see the story of what led to the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. Initially, when Pope Benedict meets Jesuit Cardinal Bergoglio, the latter was there to submit his resignation. In a rather humorous way, his letter isn’t being accepted or even considered. Later, Pope Benedict opens up about his wish to retire, this would make him the first ever Pope to do so in almost 600 years. This comes as a shock to Bergoglio and later the entire world. The Pope and the Cardinal talk about their past regrets and how they see themselves as unworthy to be where they are. The conversation brings out many tales that shine light on what happens within the walls of one of the world’s most secretive institutions.
