Why watch Stiletto?

  • Stiletto, an exciting new musical, will have its global premiere at the Charing Cross Theatre in London. Go back in time to 18th-century Venice, with its opulence and its danger.
  • Double Olivier Award nominee Tim Luscombe is responsible for adapting the show. Matthew Wilder (Disney's Mulan) composes the music and writes the lyrics for the performance. Wilder has been nominated for three Grammys, an Oscar, and a Golden Globe.
  • Opera, mystery, romance, and a spine-tingling climax are all in store for the audience, helmed by acclaimed director David Gilmore (Grease, Daisy Pulls It Off, and The Hired Man). Are you ready for a show that sheds light on the underbelly of Venice?

The yearly castration rate in Italy during the 18th century was around 5,000 boys. Nearly all of them were economically disadvantaged. Castration allowed those who survived to keep their high voices and allowed them to perform operatic female parts, where they might become famous and wealthy. Most failed. A few made it. Set in Venice, the opera capital of Europe, Stiletto is a new musical that features music and lyrics by Matthew Wilder and is written by Tim Luscombe. Get ready to dive into themes of ambition, love, and societal constraints.

Storyline

Set during the winter of 1730-31 in Venice, Europe's opera capital, Stiletto follows Marco, a young castrato destined for stardom. His path crosses with Gioia, the talented daughter of an African slave, whose musical gifts are overshadowed by societal prejudices. Their shared passion for music and status as outsiders draw them together, leading to a poignant tale of love, ambition, and the quest for justice. As their relationship deepens, they confront societal challenges, leading to a dramatic and fateful confrontation.
