The Merry Wives of Windsor is not considered one of Shakespeare's greatest works by literary experts, yet it has earned a place among fans and readers as a brilliant comedy. The play has been adapted several times, including over ten operas, which makes its unassuming origins all the more surprising. The play is set during the reign of Henry the V and features the character Sir John Falstaff, who originally appeared in Henry IV. Rumor has it that Queen Elizabeth I, evidently taken by the character, requested Shakespeare write another play to show the knight in love, and thus, The Merry Wives of Windsor came to be.
Sir John Falstaff is a bit down on his luck. Short on funds and in need of a quick buck, he hatches a plan to woo two wealthy ladies, Mistress Ford and Mistress Page, despite the very glaring obstacle: their faithful marriages to their respective husbands. As Master Ford attempts to suss out Falstaff's intentions, the Pages find themselves juggling multiple suitors for their daughter, and classic shenanigans abound.
