Why watch Troilus and Cressida?

  • The legendary tales of Greece and Troy at war come to life in Shakespeare's rarely performed play, Troilus and Cressida.
  • A satirical take on the epics that defined literature for centuries to come, this play opens with the story of the Trojan prince Troilus and his love for Cressida, but places us eight years forward in the apocalyptic wasteland that follows the war.
  • Director Owen Horsley makes his Globe debut in this biting satire of egos, pointless wars, and the cult of celebrity.

Considered one of Shakespeare's "problem plays," Troilus and Cressida is set during the time of the Trojan War and traces the love affair of Troilus and Cressida across enemy lines. The play is notable for its violent shifts between bawdy comedy and psychological drama, a trait that has often made it difficult for theatergoers to understand the characters and their motivations. Despite this, the play has been successfully adapted several times, a testament to the casts and crews who have brought this story to life.

Storyline

The Trojan War rages on and the epic feud between Achilles and Hector is at the forefront, and the Greek and Trojan forces of Agamemnon and Priam are raring to go. On the sidelines, Trojan prince and son of Priam, Troilus, is left heartbroken when his love, Cressida, is exchanged with the Greek camp as a prisoner of war. A moving tale of undying love sits quietly in the background of one of the most epic wars ever waged.
