Iconic and enchanting, Wicked is a musical that delves into the untold story of the witches from the Land of Oz and explores themes of friendship, identity, and destiny. A flip-the-script take on a classic, it opens with a jubilant refrain reminding us never to mourn the wicked and ends with a twist that takes you right back to the start.
Here's every song on the Wicked West End soundtrack.
Ding dong, the witch is dead! The citizens of Oz jubilantly celebrate the Wicked Witch's demise as Glinda the Good Witch makes her iconic descent into the scene. Something isn't quite as it seems though, and we soon hear the plot unravel, setting the stage for a tale that questions the nature of good and evil.
We're whisked away to Shiz University where students reminisce about their alma mater, introducing the academic setting where key relationships are formed, most importantly, the interesting relationship between Elphaba, the Wicked Witch with skin of green, and Galina, the good witch who is almost always decked out in pink.
In classic Disney tradition, the third song goes to the heroine, as she tells us of her hopes and dreams. Elphaba, it turns out, dreams of meeting the Wizard, believing he can help her overcome societal prejudices due to her green skin. She envisions a future, where the crowds shout her name, jubilantly celebrating a world free of the wicked. A cruel irony, one she does not quite understand yet.
A passionate loathing develops between roommates Elphaba and Glinda as the duo ach writes home expressing their mutual dislike in this humorous duet that captures their contrasting personalities.
Dr. Dillamond, a goat professor - a professor who happens to be a goat, not a professor to goats - confides in Elphaba about the unsettling discrimination against talking animals in Oz.
Fiyero, a carefree student, advocates for a life without worries, leading to a lively dance at the Ozdust Ballroom. Dashing, fun, and simplistically philosophical, it's hard not to be charmed by him. As the merriment takes center stage, however, wickedness is afoot in the shadows, and Elphaba finds herself a target of cruel jokes.
A moment of kindness can change everything. Glinda and Elphaba, having found common ground, get along far better now. Yet, there is still an obvious issue - Glinda gives her new bestie a makeover, sharing her views on popularity and the importance of fitting in, unaware that she is insulting everything that makes Elphaba who she is.
The unlikely duo continues to bond, yet beneath it all, there is another issue: a charming boy they both find themselves falling for. Elphaba reflects on her unrequited feelings for Fiyero, accepting that she may not be the one he desires. In the popular world, Glinda's the girl who gets the guy, a sorrowful lament for our leading green witch.
Elphaba and Glinda visit the Emerald City, marveling at its wonders and anticipating their meeting with the Wizard.
“Everyone deserves a chance to fly.” The kind, gentle Wizard makes his entrance, lamenting the state of things in Oz, the injustices, the cruelty. All of Oz are his children, he loves them all so dearly, and it breaks his heart to see them suffer so - or does it?
The Wizard is a fraud! The true evil that is plaguing Oz stands in front of Elphaba, and she is forced to make a choice. In a powerful act of defiance, she embraces her identity, her purpose, and her magic, and vows to fight against the Wizard's tyranny, closing out Act I with a belted riff that has gone down in history as one of the greatest moments in musical history.
Some time has passed in Oz and Elphaba is public enemy number one. Glinda celebrates her engagement to Fiyero, while the citizens praise her, unaware of her internal conflicts.
Nessarose, Elphaba's sister, is the dictator of Munchkinland with Boq by her side. You'd think she has it all; yet every step she takes seems to end badly. After one step goes terribly wrong, she rebrands herself the Wicked Witch of the East.
The Wizard attempts to justify his actions to Elphaba, portraying himself as a well-intentioned leader, claiming that people need something to believe in. We glimpse moments of hesitation in Elphaba, seeing her being swayed by his words. When she reasserts herself, however, the Wizard has her arrested.
Girls like Glinda always get the guy. Or do they? As Fiyero risks it all to help Elphaba escape, the Good Witch must accept that guys like Fiyero might just have their hearts saved for girls like Elphaba, a reversal on the previous track, and yet another moment where this musical reminds us that what we think to be true isn't always so.
Elphaba and Fiyero confess their love for each other, finding solace amidst the chaos surrounding them, knowing that worse events may follow.
The guards rip apart the lovers, leading Elphaba to try saving Fiyero in a desperate attempt that goes wrong. Believing she has lost everything, Elphaba starts to believe she might truly be as wicked as everyone says she is, and soon resolves to embrace her reputation as she laments that no good deed goes unpunished.
The threads all converge in a heated moment as Elphaba finally realizes who has been behind all the wickedness all along, but she's too late - the crowd marches on, seeking to end the tyranny of the "wicked witch" once and for all.
Elphaba and Glinda confront one another in a final moment, laying their demands bare, hoping to bring an end to the chaos. Realizing, however, that it's all too late, they acknowledge the profound impact they've had on each other's lives before bidding a heartfelt farewell.
Ding dong, the witch is dead! The Ozians celebrate, the tyranny has finally come to an end, and peace will return to the lands and all its children! Except, that's not quite how this story ends, is it?
An impeccable collection of songs that redefined the musical genre and catapulted its stars to fame, the Wicked soundtrack weaves together a narrative that challenges perceptions of good and evil, highlighting the complexities of friendship and personal growth. Nothing is ever what it seems - neither the wicked nor the good.
